Marbling is a fascinating decorative technique in which colours are floated across the surface of a prepared bath before being transferred onto another material.

Pébéo’s technique is inspired by the historic Japanese art of Suminagashi, meaning “floating ink”, as well as the decorative marbling techniques later adopted by European bookbinders.

Simple Marbling Process

The basic technique is easy to explore:

1. Prepare the Marbling Bath
Use the included Marbling Bath Thickener according to the supplied instructions.

2. Add Your Colours
Apply drops of your chosen Pébéo Marbling colours onto the surface of the prepared bath.

3. Create Your Pattern
Allow the colours to spread and interact, manipulating them as desired to create your unique design.

4. Transfer the Pattern
Place your suitable light-coloured paper, card, fabric or other compatible surface into contact with the prepared design.

5. Allow to Dry
Carefully remove your creation and allow it to dry.

For fabric projects, follow Pébéo’s instructions for fixing the dried colours with an iron.
